Sony Sells Playstation 3 At Loss

17 November 2006 - iSuppli Corp.’s dissection reveals the PlayStation 3 is an engineering masterpiece that sets a new high mark for computing price/performance—even when considering it is more expensive than its nearest rival, the Xbox 360 from Microsoft Corp. The combined materials and manufacturing cost of the PlayStation 3 is $805.85 for the model equipped with a 20Gbyte HDD, and $840.35 for the 60Gbyte HDD version. This total doesn’t include additional costs for elements including the controller, cables and packaging. At these costs, Sony is taking a considerable loss on each PlayStation 3 sold. Materials and manufacturing costs for the 20Gbyte model exceed the suggested retail price of $499 by a total of $306.85. For the 60Gbyte version, costs exceed the $599 price by $241.35. PlayStation 3’s inclusion of a power supply that packs a whopping 400-watts—yet uses a very compact, low-profile design. At $37.50, this power supply costs about twice as much as an average unit found in a PC.

Intel Detailed Job Cut Plans

4 November 2006 - Intel plans to jettison approximately 6,900 employees over the next six months as part of a broad restructuring unveiled earlier this year. Layoffs would result in charges totaling $255 million over the next two quarters. The chip giant intends to take a charge of $125 million in the fourth quarter and a charge of $130 million in the first quarter of 2007. Intel planned to cut 10,500 jobs by mid-2007 as part of an operational overhaul that also has included the sales of underperforming business units selling chips for cell phones and networking gear. The job cuts are expected to reduce Intel's global workforce to 92,000; its payroll had swelled by 30% since 2004. During the three-month period ended Sept. 30, Intel fired 1,600 employees, a majority of whom worked at factories.
