Samsung Developed Double-Sided LCD
4 January 2007 - Samsung has created the first LCD panel that can produce independent images on each side of a mobile LCD display. Samsung's new double-sided LCD can show two entirely different pictures or sets of visual data simultaneously on the front and back of the same screen. Other conventional double-sided LCDs can only show a reverse image of the same video data. This new development will replace two display panels with one, thereby reducing overall thickness of mobile products by at least 1mm. The new double-sided LCD is 2.6mm thick and 2.22" wide, with QVGA (240 x 320 pixel) resolution, and has brightness values of 250 nits for the front and 100 nits for the rear display. It will be exhibited at the Consumer Electronics Show, which opens in Las Vegas on January 8.
Samsung 3D Display For Games In 2009

Samsung has already built a 17-inch monitor prototype of the 3D display, which uses binocular disparity and time sequential "lens plus barrier" systems. It plans to complete development soon on a 19-inch commercial monitor. The new 3D display will hit the market in 2009 when new demand for a wide range of IT-related applications such as online games, e-shopping and 3D Web content will be ready.
NTTDoCoMo Portable 3D Display System
30 September 2006 - NTT DoCoMo has co-developed a portable, seven-inch 3D display system where both still images and video can be viewed in 3D without special glasses, and unlike similar displays, the images are visible off-center vertically, as well as horizontally. The system, which enables 3D images to be viewed within a 60-degree horizontal angle and 30-degree vertical angle, generates the images based on the viewer's position relative to the screen. Using a camera embedded in the display's LCD screen, the system determines where the viewer is and immediately projects 3D images through a lenticular (single-convex) lens attached to the front of the screen. This results in the viewer seeing an object that appears to leap out from the screen. DoCoMo, which hopes to put the system to practical use for dynamic, highly realistic games and mobile Internet shopping, will exhibit the system at its booth at CEATEC JAPAN 2006 from October 3 to 7.
