Coolermaster Cosmos 1000 - The Gargantuan Steel Monster

Coolermaster has positioned the Cosmos 1000 to be the successor of the original CM Stacker enclosure. This casing boosts some pretty unique features for a case this size, with added emphasis on noise dampening and insulation. A Steel and aluminum hybrid, the Cosmos 1000 weighs a hefty 18KG, and you can imagine how heavy it'll be with all the components thrown in! In this review, we will be taking the Cosmos apart and give you a piece of our mind on this steel monster.

The exteriors

The box

The case! Aluminum sidepanels. bars and front whilst the rest of the case comprises of steel.

3/4 view

The backview. As you can see, the trend nowadays for power supply mounts hasgradually shifted to the bottom of the case, which ensures that the heat within the case doesnt spur up the fan inside the PSU, thus generating more noise.

The Front I/O. as you can see, Coolermaster has gladly included a front eSATA port for easy access, something that is still quite uncommon less even in the higher end cases available in the market today.

The provision for water cooling tubing up to 1/2 inch is available at the back of the case.

Open Sesame...

The sidepanels are secured by this latch,

and you can release the side panel just by pushing the latch upwards.

and the side panel comes off!

The side panel comprises of mainly aluminum, reinforced with a layer of steel, and the black stuff you see is a layer of noise insulation material added to dampen any possible noise generated by any mechanical components within the case.

Side view with the side panel removed. The black duct that you see in the middle of the case is used to channel airflow to the expansion cards within the case.

continued...

The top panel contains a duct that conceals two 120mm exhaust fans. As seen in the picture, the duct can be remove to facilitate placement for a dual 120mm radiator for water cooling purposes.

Two fan filters can be found below the case, one for for the power supply and one for the sole 120mm intake fan.

Front view with the door

and the front deal without the door! The door is easily removable via a plastic catch.

Bay panels are also easily removable via a catch. There is a total of 5 5.25" bays as you can see, with a 3.5" conversion bracket provided.

Examining the insides

the 5.25" bays comes with a rentention mechanism, just press the blue button to keep your 5.25" devices in place!

Coolermaster's very own hard drive organizer! Instead of having 3.5" bays, Coolermaster mounted 6 vertical racks that can contain one hard drive each.

One of the racks removed. Every rack is enforced with noise dampening studs.

The air duct removed.

The bottom 120mm exhaust fan

A dampening gasket is installed for the power supply holder.

The two 120mm exhaust on top. If you have realized by now, Coolermaster employs stamped grilles in the Cosmos, something that enthusiasts might dislike as it really impedes airflow.

The 120mm rear exhaust fan

PCI slot holders are  held by thumbscrews, which adds to the tooless capabilities of the case.

Conclusion

Coolermaster has delivered a more than decent full tower case catered for the enthusiasts, with lots of provision for water-cooling and lots of bays for hard drives and expansion devices. These can very well cover up the minor flaws that exists in this case. Nevertheless, Coolermaster might want to consider coming up with a full aluminum version of the Cosmos 1000, as the hefty weight of the case might be one deterring factor for enthusiasts to pick up the case.
